Psychological autopsy

Retrospective study of a deceased person’s behaviour, circumstances and psychological state using relevant records and informant accounts.

Questions an assessment may address

  • What information is available about the preceding period?
  • Which changes and circumstances can be reconstructed?
  • Which hypotheses can be tested against the sources?

How we approach this matter

We organise the chronology and distinguish contemporaneous records from later recollections. Each source is assessed for origin, consistency and limitations. Coordination with other forensic disciplines may be appropriate while retaining the defined psychological scope.

What the report provides

A reasoned reconstruction of relevant psychological factors, with hypotheses, supporting information and limitations. It does not replace a medical autopsy or factual investigation.

Useful material for the initial review

  • Death-related and procedural records.
  • Lawfully provided personal or clinical material.
  • Chronology and relevant informant interviews.

A brief description is enough for the first contact. Document sharing is arranged afterwards.

A common question

Can the person’s intentions be established with certainty?

Retrospective inferences depend on the sources and retain uncertainty. The report explains which hypotheses may be supported and within what limits.
